Canada’s\u00a0Clean50 honoree list was released just a few days ago to honour 50 Canadians who are sustainability leaders in a variety of categories. Of the 50 honorees, the most notable is\u00a0Sharkwater<\/a><\/em>\u00a0filmmaker\u00a0Rob Stewart<\/a>, who will receive Clean50’s first ever Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously on\u00a0Sept. 28\u00a0in Toronto.<\/p>\n

Clean50 Executive Director Gavin Pitchford said, “Selecting Clean50 winners becomes more exciting each year. We have the luxury of considering nominations from across the country with an amazing range of backgrounds.”<\/p>\n

In 2006, when Stewart’s first film\u00a0Sharkwater\u00a0<\/em>debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival, it shed a light on the incredible devastation caused by the shark fin industry on these majestic animals. He opened our eyes to how\u00a0shark finning\u00a0was leading to the destruction of our oceans. The movie, seen in countries around the world by over 125 million people, not only won 50 awards, but saved the lives of an estimated\u00a0one third\u00a0of the world’s sharks as laws and public policies were changed worldwide.<\/p>\n

Stewart\u2019s second documentary,\u00a0Revolution<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(2013), spoke of the greatest threats facing humanity as he discovered that the decimation of sharks was only the beginning of a crisis. The No. 1 Canadian documentary of 2013,\u00a0Revolution<\/em> again garnered many awards, and showed viewers that climate change would be much worse than originally thought.\u00a0 Burning oil, gas and coal was causing devastating ocean acidification that would lead to the loss of the reefs, 25% of the world\u2019s fish and possibly the oceans themselves.\u00a0 Today, this is common knowledge. He wanted viewers to see how beautiful the sharks, oceans and sea creatures were, so they would work to protect them.<\/p>\n

Stewart\u00a0has inspired many young filmmakers, including Julia Barnes (Sea of Life<\/em>), Natalie Lucier (To the Orcas, With Love<\/em>), Jonah Bryson (The Fight For Bala<\/em>) and Australia’s Madison Stewart (Shark Girl<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Sharkwater: Extinction<\/a><\/em>, which Stewart was working on when he\u00a0passed away during\u00a0a tragic diving accident, is slated for release in 2018.\u00a0It works to further expose the multi-billion dollar shark industry that secretly\u00a0forces\u00a0shark products into our everyday lives while simultaneously causing the extinction of one of Earth\u2019s most important animals.<\/p>\n

Past Clean50 honorees include a long list of influential Canadian citizens\/environmentalists, including Loblaw CEO Galen G. Weston for his work to preserve the wilderness; Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne for saving \u00a0Northwestern Ontario\u2019s Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) freshwater research site; Quebec Premier Phillippe Couillard for his \u00a0expertise on climate change and carbon markets; Alberta Premier Rachel Notley for making Alberta a leader in the fight against climate change and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, who is leading the charge to make his city the greenest in the world by 2020.<\/p>\n

Clean50 Summit 7.0 takes place on September\u00a028, 2017\u00a0at Toronto’s Royal Canadian Yacht Club Clubhouse on Toronto Island.
