More than 1,000 dams have been removed across the United States because of safety concerns, sediment buildup, inefficiency or having otherwise outlived usefulness.\u00a0A paper published today in\u00a0Science\u00a0finds that rivers are resilient and respond relatively quickly after a dam is removed.\u00a0\u201cThe apparent success of dam removal as a means of river restoration is reflected in the increasing number of dams coming down, more than 1,000 in the last 40 years,\u201d said lead author of the study Jim O\u2019Connor, geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. \u201cRivers quickly erode sediment accumulated in former reservoirs and redistribute it downstream, commonly returning the river to conditions similar to those prior to impoundment.\u201d\"\"<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":0,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"class_list":["post-296678","news","type-news","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\nRivers recover after dam removal -
